What Happens When The Children of Divorce Have Special Needs Every divorce has an impact on children. What happens when divorcing parents have children with special needs? How do those needs affect parenting plans as well as parental communication and decision making? Will the divorce affect any subsidies or government assistance provided to the children? Come hear two experts discuss what divorce professionals need to be aware of when children with special needs are cuaght up in the divorce process. Speakers: Linda Santos Smith, Ph.D - Dr. Smith is Assistant Director of the Comprehensive Family Evaluation Center at Tufts-New England Medical Center, as well as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Tufts University School of Medicine. She specializes in child and family forensic evaluation, including Guardian ad Litem evaluations, parental capacity evaluations and child abuse/trauma evaluation. Dr. Smith also has extensive experience in assessment and treatment of special needs children in both clinical and forensic settings. She received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Columbia University. David Jones, Esq. - Attorney Jones is with the firm of Rosenberg, Freedman and Goldstein in Newton, MA. He previously served as Assistant General Counsel of the Massachusetts Department of Public Welfare, specializing in Medicaid recovery and appeals. He has lectured frequently on the issues relating to Medicaid and public benefits eligibility. Attorney Jones is also a contributing author to Estate Planning for the Aged or Incapacitated Client (MCLE). He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and the University of Chicago Law School.
